Fat Vegans?

With PETA and other ‘vegan’ organizations basically trying to fat-shame omnivores into going vegan, let’s take a look at veganism as a health choice. Is it healthier than the Standard American Diet (SAD)? Can you lose weight while eating a vegan diet? The answers are: It can be, and you can.

A lot of vegans eat crap. Oreos, Sun Chips, sugary cereal, white bread and pasta. Sugar on everything. I was a morbidly obese vegan for a long time, and it wasn’t until I cut that crap out of my diet that I started losing weight. (80 pounds down so far- dropped from 320 to 240, and from pant size 44 to 36). Fat vegans exist. Fat omnis exist. Fat vegetarians exist. Why? They eat shit.

If a vegan eats well, fuck yeah they’ll lose weight. Fuck yeah, they’ll be healthy. Fuck yeah, they’ll most likely avoid shitty diseases like diabetes. If a vegan eats shit, like sugar oreo sandwiches, fuck yeah they’ll get fat, fuck yeah they’ll be unhealthy. Common sense (and some dietary knowledge kind of dictates that shit).

So why go vegan if you can be just as unhealthy with a vegan diet?

Because veganism is not a fucking diet. It’s a lifestyle. Its more than abstaining from meat, milk, and eggs. We eschew ALL animal products the best we can. Leather, silk, honey, wool, feathers, and fur. A person who just cuts animal products out of their diet is not a vegan. They are a vegetarian.

I am a vegan due to ethics. I do not feel right when others have to die to feed me, when they don’t have to. Yes, I know some animals die when vegetables are farmed. I know death is a part of the animal kingdom, part of life. I am removing myself from that cycle as best I can. We cannot let perfect be the enemy of good.

The non-aggression principle played a large part in forming my worldview. I am in no means a pacifist, if attacked, I will defend myself. Whether it be by a human, a lion, or a dog. I will not go out of my way to hurt or harm others. Whether they be a human, a lion, or a dog. I will not exploit another. Whether they be a human, a lion, or a dog.

Okay, fuck everything about this. While I can’t stand the fact that PETA kills its animals, it still does bring shit like this to light, and for that, I am thankful.

Is your cheese worth this? Is your glass of milk? The dairy industry is just as cruel as the meat industry, in some ways it is more cruel. Especially when there are great alternatives. It ain’t just soy milk in the stores anymore. Almond milk, coconut milk, hazelnut milk, and hemp milk are all delicious, and cruelty-free.

There is no fucking reason to support this.

1) Cows are not milk machines. After years of living in filthy conditions, being kept constantly pregnant, and being forced to produce 10 times more milk than they naturally would, dairy cows are slaughtered.

2) “Moo” is not your first language. Human babies don’t say “goo goo moo moo”, so why treat them like calves? Humans are the only animals who drink breast milk after infancy and the only animals who drink milk from a different species. It makes as much sense for people to drink cow’s milk as it would for dogs to drink giraffe’s milk!

3) Cookies and cramps don’t mix. Studies show that over 75 percent of the world’s population is lactose-intolerant. Can you say abdominal cramps, bloating, and diarrhea?

4) Dairy is pus-itively scary. There’s more to that glass of milk than you think. Dairy products are commonly contaminated with blood, pus, pesticides, hormones, and antibiotics.

5) There’s veal in your cereal. Milk fuels the cruel veal industry. Considered byproducts of the dairy industry, male calves are dragged away to veal crates when they are just hours old.

6) Milk is bad to the bone. Contrary to a popular milky myth, studies strongly implicate dairy in causing, rather than preventing, osteoporosis, because its high protein content leeches calcium from the body.

7) Milk does the planet bad. Bad for mother cows, milk production is also bad for Mother Earth; it’s a disastrous source of water pollution. Just one dairy cow produces 120 pounds of waste every day—as much as two dozen people could produce—but with no toilets, sewers, or treatment plants.

8) The white stuff isn’t the right stuff. Milk is formulated to meet the nutritional needs of calves—who have four stomachs and gain an average of 115 kg in their first six months. It’s mad for humans to chug moo-juice!

9) No grain means lots of pain. Every glass of milk takes a meal away from the hungry. Crops that could be used to feed the hungry are instead used to feed dairy cows. It takes a huge amount of grain cycled through cows to produce a very small amount of milk.

10) A milk mustache is a real heartbreaker. Devoid of fiber and complex carbohydrates but loaded with saturated fat and cholesterol, dairy products have been linked to heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, and certain types of cancer.

Milk- you don’t need it, it’s terrible for you, and it fuels (and is fueled by) the veal industry.

Is eating a vegan diet healthy? In a word, yes.

Now, being vegan and eating nothing but white rice, white sugar, white bread, white pasta, and white potatoes, with a helping of Oreos here and there is certainly not healthy, and is about as unhealthy as the Standard American Diet (SAD). Being a vegan and eating fresh vegetables, seeds, nuts, and berries, maybe with a bit of fermented tofu and seitan, and a handful of whole grains and legumes, and lots of water is extremely healthy. The more-or-less ‘Paleo Vegan’ diet, if you will. Veganism is better argued as an ethical diet rather than a healthy diet, mostly for the reason outlined in the first sentence. Just because something is vegan, does not make it healthy. Oreos will never be healthy, sorry.

Best vegan foods:

Lots of:
Dark green leafy vegetables.
Peppers, tomatoes, eggplant.
Olive oil.
Coconut (oil.)
Nutritional Yeast.

In Moderation:
Sweet potatoes.

Whole Grain bread or pasta.
White potatoes.

Animal flesh or secretions. (come on, this is a vegan blog)

Remember, eating dietary fat will not make you fat, and will help you eat at a calorie deficit if you’re trying to lose weight, as it is more filling than carbohydrates, and will keep you full longer. A good ratio to keep while dieting is this:
55% fats (remember, good, healthy fats from plants)
30% protein
15% carbohydrates.
Sites and apps like Myfitnesspal will help you monitor this. Or you could just wing it. Either or.

You don’t have to eat animal flesh and secretions just because you want to eliminate sugars and junk from your body.

Here is a sample meal plan (without measurements or portion sizes, because your body will tell you when you’re full, drink plenty of water and listen to your body).

Tofu scramble with nutritional yeast, mushrooms, jalapeno, broccoli, and spinach cooked with coconut oil.
Cup of coffee.

Salad of Wild Rocket lettuce, peppers, olives, tomato, avocado, a few almonds, and any other vegetable you want, really. Olive oil drizzled over. Water or tea.

Spicy eggplant with garlic, hot peppers, side of grilled asparagus, over some cauliflower ‘rice’. Water or tea.


Depending on portion size, this equals to roughly 1300-1500 calories for the day. Perfect, really. Remember in your macro counting, you subtract the dietary fiber from the total carbohydrate total, you don’t digest fiber, so it doesn’t count. Plus it helps you poop. Pooping is fun (and it gives you time to read, and reading is good)
